These are the cutest pups that I have seen in a while. They have been at the shelter for over 3 weeks. We wanted to make sure that they did not break with parvo after giving them their vaccine. It has been 2 weeks today since they had their vaccine so I think they are good to go. Both are girls and the little white one is blue-eyed and deaf. She has some speckling on her eyes but that is the only coloring she has. I believe they will be big dogs as they have tree trunk legs and big feet. They need rescue ASAP as they will be first on the list. They are approx 10-12 weeks old.

Adoptive family wants to return after 8 months due to Pinky not getting along with their female dog; Pinky is wonderful with all people, children and male dogs.  In talking with the people last night, they are not happy about returning Pinky, but know of no other recourse.  I am to call them in a week, hopefully, with a foster situation for Pinky.  We can use help with finding foster for her instead of having Pinky resort back to a shelter setting.  Remember, too, Pinky is deaf.

I just feel so torn about what to do with them. My dad is really tired of having them so I’ve got to find a place for them soon. I just feel bad even thinking about taking them to a rescue. I’m not sure if it would be worse to put them down or take them to a rescue where they will probably live in a cage the rest of their life. I just don’t think the odds of them getting adopted is very good because of the fact that they are 9 ½ years old. They really are great girls. Here is a little synopsis about them: 

They are 9 ½ year old  40 pound, border collie/husky mix. They are sisters from the same litter and have never been apart.  They would probably have to stay together because Speckles (Speck) is completely deaf.  She’s been deaf from birth but Snuggles has always taken good care of her.  She relies on Snuggles to come get her when it is time to come inside and to always point her in the right direction.  Snuggles definitely takes on the big sister role and always watches out for Speck.  Because of that I’m not sure if they would do well apart.  They are up to date on their vaccines and have never missed shots or anything.  They’ve both been really healthy dogs and I haven’t had much problems with either of them.  Sometimes Snuggles bladder gets a little weak (the vet says it probably happens when she is supposed to be in heat) but you just have to take her out a little more often for a week and then she’s back to normal.  Other than that they don’t have any health problems.  They have both had their complete senior blood work done and everything came out fine.  They are really great dogs, they just need somewhere to run a lot.  We are getting rid of them because we live on a hill and can’t really fence our backyard.  This means they have to be taken out on a leash all the time and with two kids in the house now we are kind of out of space.  They each weigh about 40 pounds so we all can’t cram in very well.  Also, they DO NOT get along with cats.  I think they think our cat is a really fat squirrel because they try to attack and eat her.  As a result they have to live on separate floors and I’m extremely concerned about if one of the kids ever got between them and the cat.  I’m sure they would get bitten and I just can’t worry about that right now.  They have never been around Lainey but they were SO GREAT with Logan.  He loved them and they loved him.  They were extremely protective and always watched out for him.  When they are a bunch of kids around they tend to bark just because they want to herd them all.  However, they seem to be really good with kids in their house. Snuggles has a pretty aggressive personality with other dogs just because she wants to be the alpha dog but we’ve never had any problems with her fighting another dog. When she goes to play with my in-laws dog they all run around like crazy but she definitely assumes the alpha role. Speck on the other hand is completely laid back and would immediately do great with any other dog. I’m not sure about other pets because they have only been around cats and dogs.  They really are great dogs and if I could keep them I would. We just tried to sell our house so that we could find a fenced backyard and we couldn’t sell it. So as a result I’m having to get rid of them.  

Thank you so much for helping me find a place for them. I really don’t want to have to take them to a rescue, I would prefer to give them to a good home with people who love dogs and would take great care of them their last several years. I know they are old and most people don’t want older dogs but they have always been extremely healthy and I know they will be great pets for someone. Thank you again and please let me know if you hear anything. I’m kind of on a timeline because my dad said he really doesn’t want to keep them anymore. He just hates having to come home from work to feed them and take care of them. If someone is interested in them and you think they are a good home, I wouldn’t mind giving them a couple hundred bucks to cover their food for a little while. This little guy was picked up by Animal Control two weeks ago and nobody has claimed him. He is deaf and just skin and bones. The shelter vet checked him. He seems to be a young dog and is tiny, about 2.5 lbs, but is underweight. I brought him home with me for the weekend to give him some freedom from his cage at the shelter.

Louisville, KY: Both Dogs Need Rescue

A white female American Staffordshire Terrier named Evie. She is white with blue eyes and weighs about 35-40lbs. She is a smaller girl. She is completely deaf and is sweet. Pikeville, KY: Lab/Setter Mix Has One Week

Look at that sweet face! She is about 1 1/2 yrs old and approx 50 lbs. She is all white with a few faint liver spot on her ears. She is believed to be a labrador, english setter or spaniel mix. Hard to tell being all white!

She was found as a stray by a family that looked for her owners for a month before turning her over to PCAS. They believe she is deaf and so she is listed as special needs.

Pike County is doing all they can, but are overwhelmed with animals turned in and surrended due to economic conditions and the mudslides that decimated peoples homes. They are actively working with rescues, even out of state rescues, to save as many animals as possible. Transportation may be available.

Andy is DEAF. He is about 7 mos old, housetrained, reported to get along with children and other pets. His owners surrendered him to the shelter because he is quite vocal. As can be common with hearing impaired animals, he vocalizes a lot. He has a loud meow. If he lived in a home with someone there much of the time, he would probably be quieter. Andy MUST be an INDOOR cat due to his special needs, his coloring, etc. If you are interested, please call. We are very rescue friendly to legitimate animal rescues. We are currently over capacity and Andy is being kept in our quarantine room due to the overcrowding. His time is limited.

Ermine, KY: Pit Bull Pup Needs Help ASAP

Spike is a very sweet solid white pit bull that is deaf. He will be one year old in December. He weighs about 60-70 lbs. Spike is not neutered. His family is looking for him a new home because they just don’t have the time for him and they recently moved and can’t have him where they are now. He is currently staying with a friend but needs a home or rescue or he will be going to the local kill shelter. His family did not know he was deaf when they purchased him and they are not familiar with training a deaf dog. They say he is very friendly and great with kids. They have been trying to sale him on a classifieds page and this is where I saw him. I contacted them about a month ago and they were hesitant to accept any help. I’m afraid they will still try to sale him even though they have now accepted our help so the sooner he can find rescue the better. I don’t want him to end up with dog fighters, which are quite common here. He is located in Perry County, Kentucky

Harrodsburg, KY: Deaf Pit Bull with Puppies

UPDATE: According to the shelter, "The momma has already come down with an intestinal bacterial infection and is on med's for that. She has lost so much weight. The babies are doing fine but needs to get out before they come down with something."

Her name is Tinker and she is a deaf pit bull mix. She has 5 - three week old puppies that will need to stay with her until weaned. Tinker has one blue eye and one brown eye. She is white with a faint tan color and weighs approx. 50 lbs. She is around 4 yrs old. Tinker is extremely sweet and lets her caretakers go in her kennel with her and the babies with no sign of aggression. She is a very gentle and sweet girl. She needs a rescue that can take both her and the puppies ASAP. She is at the Mercer Humane Society in Harrodsburg, KY.

Pineville, KY: Deaf Australian Shepherd Mix Puppy

This puppy is at a local shelter. All I know about him is what was listed on his Petfinder page. I can offer to help with pulling him or transport if a rescue can take him.

McCloud is a cute and friendly white Australian shepherd/dalmation mix puppy that is deaf. He was brought to the shelter with his siblings where he was adopted out only to be returned after his adopters discovered he was deaf. This is a kill shelter, but they are rescue friendly. Please help this boy today because the shelter is very crowded.
