My name is Cherie; I work as the Adoption Coordinator and Receptionist at an emergency animal hospital located in West Hollywood. I'm just hoping the more people hear about June the better her chances are. So here is Junes story and maybe you could share it and help me help her find a home:

Every once in a while a stray dog or cat in need of veterinary care is abandoned at our office and we are happy to help out. We do our best to find them homes but on occasion it can be very difficult. One such case is a 2 year old Pit-American Bulldog mix. She arrived at the hospital extremely painful: we thought she may have been hit by a car. After x-rays showing no broken bones we treated her to the best of our ability and within days she made what we considered a miraculous recovery. Being very clever, we named her June, as that was the month
she arrived at our doorstep.

Shortly after she arrived we came to the conclusion that she was hearing impaired (almost completely deaf). I am writing to plead for help in finding June a permanent home or even a rescue to take her in. She currently spends up to 22 hours a day in a kennel due to the fact that our hospital lacks the staff and space to spend the much needed time with her.

June is clearly a special needs dog and needs an owner who will help her with the patience and training she needs. June is not dog aggressive but she has met very few dogs and should be considered a caution with other pets until she has been properly socialized. She would likely do best in a home with no other animals until she gets further training.

She is so energetic and gets a bit of cabin fever in her kennel, she loves to play but can be a little rough at times. I am desperate to avoid the hospital management sending her to the shelter so I am reaching out to organizations like yours. It is my deepest wish to find her a place with people who will love her and give her the attention she so much deserves.

What a Spoiled Princess Angel is!

Angel, who is deaf and approximately 4 years old, was brought in as a stray and saved from a shelter near Newhall, CA by Lisa Tipton at AngelDogs Foundation. She was not a stray, but rather, a free dog when she was captured. Her owners finally located her and showed up at the shelter demanding release with no fines or fees required! Angel was scheduled for euthanasia and her owners were at the shelter just MINUTES before her death, still arguing the fees and refusing to pay! 

Luckily, Lisa Tipton stepped in after getting word that there was an amazing deaf dog was in urgent need of rescue, and she did so just in the nick of time! Angel, actually named Corto(a) at the time (I think...), thankfully left in the safe company of Lisa!  Lisa said Angel just sat in the car just staring at her, while Lisa kept her face covered for protection with an arm and elbow just in case this strange dog decided to go crazy!  After a few minutes of Angel getting closer to Lisa's face while she stared, she gently licked her in thanks and the rest is history!

Lisa gave Angel her name after deciding she was special enough to bear the name of her non-profit rescue foundation!  Angel is the first pit bull, and the first deaf dog ever rescued by the foundation, so I guess she made quite an impression! (well- I happen to KNOW she did!)  The amazing training she received while in foster care was done by Lisa's husband, professional dog trainer, Mark Tipton. He is an extremely gentle and patient man and any time I observe Angel around him, she acts like she has the biggest crush in the world!  He taught her basic hand signals for commands, which he then taught me, and Angel and I have come up with many others of our own from there!

I first saw Angel on Petfinder.com. It was my first search on the sight and it was a few months after the passing of my first pit bull and soulmate, 15 year old Cayenne.  I didn't know how to live without her, but I did know that I didn't want to live without a dog!  I had the time, love and patience to give to dog and decided I wanted to adopt a special needs dog!  I remembered an advertisement I saw in a Pennysaver magazine 15+ years ago when Cayenne was a puppy...  It always stuck with me- it was a black and white piicture of a bunch of Dalmatian pups with the caption, "Perfect Puppies available to a good home. God only forgot to give us hearing!"  I NEVER forgot that (probably because I never knew of a deaf pet's plight) and vowed I would help deaf dogs one day!  I faxed my adoption application within minutes after seeing Angel's profile on Petfinder.com.  I don't know how or why she was the one I was drawn to out of all those dogs that needed a home, but I know that it was meant to be!  I desperately needed an Angel at such a low point in my life.

Lisa replied almost immediately after receipt of the application to schedule a meeting and home visit.  She said she was actually sold on me as a candidate when she read on the paperwork that I'd prefer to have my dog sleep in bed with me!  Well- Angel does share my bed with me every night!  My first impression of her and the best word I can use to describe her is MATERNAL!  She conveys so much emotion through her eyes and that beautiful green-eyed stare, and when she looked into my eyes the first time after standing up on her hind legs to get closer to my face, she conveyed that she simply just wanted to take care of me!  (and I thought I was the one the was doing the adopting! HaHa!)

Angel has been with me for almost 2 years, and she teaches me something new all the time!  She does not have a disability due to lack of hearing- she has an ABILITY!  She studies everything a human does around her like there will be an exam on it later!  If you have a project, she's your assistant!  She reads body language and facial expressions better than any living creature I've seen, and I SWEAR she reads lips now!  She even knows the differences in my wardrobe- if she sees me take out some jeans or sweatpants... FORGET ABOUT IT!!  She jumps up and down like a ping-pong ball and barks her high, shrill, excited bark and "Roo-Roo"!  

But if she sees me dressing in a skirt and heels, the depression sets in and she mopes around because she knows those aren't walking clothes!  A friend who was in the Navy put on his white uniform one day and she was completely enthralled and enamored with him like I've never seen act around another person before!  She had a human dressed just like her! She even speaks up and demands her beauty products when I apply face lotion and make-up!  If I'm putting the nice smelling stuff on me, she knows it's good enough for her!  (spoiled little diva!)  She wont stop barking and nudging me until I mimic what I do to my own face on her!  I think she really enjoys the nurturing aspect of it because when she first came to live with me, it was summertime and I had to apply baby sunblock to her to prevent sunburn while she'd sun herself.  I know she loved how the cool lotion felt on her hot skin and has been addicted ever since!

Oh, she LOVES to wear girlie satin dresses with bows (thanks again to Lisa Tipton for giving us her first "dress-up" dress!) and her favorite wardrobe accessory for herself is a pair of wings!  Well- actually, many, many pairs of wings!!  She has little girls' dress-up wings that she loves to wear because of all the extra attention she gets from everyone that sees!  I bought her angel wings, fairy wings, light-up wings, christmas elf wings, ladybug wings.

She loves to dip in the pool after her daily 2 mile walks, but only on the first step in the pool... I call it her "nipple dip"!  She doesn't want to get her hair wet and mess it up!  Haha!  I swear- I couldn't give birth to my own genetic child who would be as similar to me as Angel is!!

She has helped me with temporary foster dogs, and although a little jealous sometimes, she is always loving and patient at the core.  She has inspired me, rehabilitated me, and changed my life for the better in every way!

Stolen and Abused Pup is Back with the Family

Harmony, was found after being stolen for several weeks. Harmony's mom adopted her to surprise daddy for Christmas. During her short time missing, there was reports of abuse. She is lucky to be ok and reunited with her family, who have not given up on her from the beginning. Harmony is a family member just like Thomasson's human kids.

Los Angeles, CA: A Home Needed for a Boxer

Charlie is a 2 years old who spends way to much time by herself. Deaf Senior needs a home. Last Thursday I was driving in Watts when a dog ran across a busy intersection and was nearly struck by 4 cars. I immediately pulled over and ran to him. Normally when I chase after strays, they run. When I approached this dog, he immediately surrendered and looked at me with desperation. With a hodgepodge leash I was able to get him to my car. He jumped in immediately and collapsed on the front seat. He was panicked, scared and dehydrated. This poor dog was in bad shape. His hair was so matted that he had trouble walking. I got him water and to a groomer right away. I needed to know what I was dealing with so we shaved him completely. Turns out "Willy" is a neutered male. He is a poodle mix. He was not wearing a collar and is not microchipped. He is approximately 12 years old and completely DEAF. He was checked by my vet today and amazingly does not appear to have any medical issues (he does have cataract). He is missing quite a few teeth. After a couple days of food, water, sleep and lots of belly rubs, his true personality is emerging. He is a gentle sweetheart who is so appreciative of being saved. He gets along with all dogs, is house trained, enjoys walks and loves to take naps. He was definitely loved at some point in his life but for whatever reason ended up homeless and alone in a really bad part o town. Please help me find him a forever home. He deserves to live out his senior years peacefully.

URGENT URGENT DEAF BOY AT DELANO ANIMAL SHELTER!!

CAGE# E-13. He came in as a stray with cement covering the wounds on his face. He is about 3-4 years old. Despite all he has been through he is a gentled giant.

Does not know hand commands but is good on leash. Doesn't have problems with other dogs. No cats please! Needs rescue or experienced person who knows about deaf bully breeds. Please help. He has been at the shelter for about 4 months and needs to get out soon!

Hi you guys, can you please help me network this dog, was going to be killed today but I got a 24 hour extention. He is apparently blind and deaf and is not in good shape, needs a cozy bed and lots of tlc. Please don't let him die in the shelter! He is so lonely , cold and scared!!!!!!!! I haven't met him yet but I hear he is very sweet!

You guys know that I love these little special cases so much, but we've taken in so many hard cases and geriatric dogs, that it would be very difficult right now so i'm begging you to help me network this poor baby and maybe someone can open up their heart and give him a wonderful loving home. He won't need much! I know he will appreciate it so much!!!!!

And FYI this dog cannot go on a long road trip, or on a plane out of state. He is not healthy enough to travel!

Today is July 22, 2010. These 2 deaf dogs have been living in the backyard of a foreclosed home since July 10th. Lola and Chaos have no more than a week to find a rescuer, foster, or adopter. Otherwise, they will be taken to a high kill shelter.

Lola and Chaos are both 3 year old deaf female Boxers. They are littermates but Chaos is like a "mama" for Lola who is a little shy and insecure. The owner's husband died of cancer leaving her with 6 children and in a bad place financially as all the $ was spent for his care. She lost her husband, her home, and she does not want her dogs to end up at the shelter. But all the rescues are full... she's hit a dead end. Can you help her by rescuing, fostering, adopting, donating towards the dogs, or networking?

When I entered their "territory" (backyard), they attacked me with slobbery kisses and happy tails. They are very friendly, sweet, lovebugs with irresistible mugs. Don't worry about the little Chihuahua mix... the family can have a dog under 25 lbs in their new apartment so he is not in danger. They were raised with children, love to play with tennis balls, and very bonded to each other. They would love to be rescued together, but they can be placed separately with a wonderful family. Burbank, CA: Deaf Cat Needs a Foster or Home by June

BEAUTIFUL ABANDONED DEAF KITTY DESPERATELY NEEDS HOME

“Tuna,” a deaf calico kitty with lovely painterly markings was abandoned/lost in Burbank, where my husband and I noticed her hanging out on people’s porches for almost two years. She was injured on various occasions by other local animals; she was a soft target as she could not hear them approaching.

Tuna was badly injured in one such encounter last year. Her wounds got infected, she was clearly in a lot of pain, and her condition swiftly deteriorated. Since everyone on the street insisted she was not their responsibility, we decided to step in and take her to the vet. Once on antibiotics, she quickly healed, and is now back to being the picture of health.

We have been fostering Tuna for the last year: she is a sweet, purring bundle who loves to sit by you and be cuddled and kissed; she adores human company and is a talkative little girl who calls out to you to be petted. She is a smallish cat, with lovely black-rimmed eyes. We took her on as a foster, fully knowing we could not keep her for a variety of complicated reasons.

Tuna is slowly beginning to tolerate the company of other cats. She has had a tough life (abandoned twice!) and is still a tiny bit skittish and shy sometimes, although she has been getting beautifully socialized over the past many months. She is litter-trained and de-flea’d, and tested negative for FeLV, FIV, and HW; the vet estimated her age at four years.

Please give this adorable deaf little girl the safe and loving forever (or foster) home she desperately needs. We need to place her by June at the very latest.

Baldwin Park, CA: Deaf/Blind Senior Chow to die 5/10

UPDATE: Pledge for a Qualified 501c3 Rescue: $1,075 upfront plus a televised feature on the person behind saving this dog and also the dog in California.

THE GOOD

First the good news. The shelter has given Ebony an extension until 5/14, with a review on 5/15. Also, JC O'Connell has added $25 per month for a full year to an already generous pledge for a 501c3 rescue to take this dog. Additionally, I have offers of pull assistance if needed.

THE BAD

I was notifed by the shelter yesterday that they tried to conduct a temperament test on Ebony and he growled and tried to bite. Note that a temp test is standard procedure for the shelter to approve public adoption for a Chow, and I expect there were many calls to the shelter concerning this dog. Ebony is now for rescue only to an approved 501c3, as he is labeled agressive. Since a real temperament test was not even possible given the situation, this seems an inaccurate and unfair judgement. Given that he is old, blind, deaf, and was abandoned to a strange place where he has received little contact, his behavior might be expected and normal given the situation. But now his options have narrowed.

THE UGLY

Ebony was failed first by the owner that abandoned him, and now by the shelter system. Each day he remains caged, his hope is waning.

THE HOPE

There is still hope for Ebony. There are rescues who will believe in him, who are willing to give him a chance and an opportunity to experience love, care, comfort, and security for his remaining days. Please keep networking for Ebony until he is rescued and safe.

Look at this gorgeous little girl! Emma (A268441) is here at the Pasadena Humane Society and needs your help to find a special forever home. She is deaf and needs a little extra help to get into a loving home. Emma is such a happy girl despite her disability. She loves nothing more than to be petted and cuddled and to lie in the sunshine.

She is a very petite dog and is only 10 months old. She has the cutest freckly nose and a very calm nature. She is good with other dogs, a little unsure because she can’t hear, but playful and happy. Other than her hearing problems she is healthy and copes very well with being in the shelter.
