Kennesaw, GA: Cat Needs Access to Outdoor

Edgar is deaf and therefore cannot be an outside cat. Yet that is all he wants. He sits by the window and cries all day and night to go outside. In the past 2 months, he has gotten angrier and angrier and has started spraying all over my house. He has been to the vet to make sure it is not a medical issue, and then was put on anxiety medication in hopes to stop the spraying and get him to calm down, but it has not helped. He is dying to be outside and is destroying my house in the meantime. I cannot keep him anymore. He currently spends most of his time in the garage as we are not here to watch him during the day. I hate that he is out there, but do not know what else to do. I'm am reaching the end of my options and am starting to feel desperate.

Edgar needs to be in a place that has a screen in porch, or better yet, needs to be somewhere in the middle of no where where there is a barn, maybe with other cats. Trust me when I say that he needs to be outside and will be miserable inside no matter where he is. I know the obvious complication is his deafness, but I truly feel the only place he will be happy is outside.

Contact excessive411@yahoo.com if you are equipped to handle Edgar.

Thank you for your time and assistance,
Rachel

  1. Do you have a cage for him to be in while he is outside? I mean a big cage where he can run or walk. I used to have a long cage for one of my cats who used to be an outside cat before I got him, and he loved it. He preferred being in the house for the night and for some parts of the day, but being outside for an hour or two was enough for him. Or maybe you can put a leash on your cat and snap it to the clothes line for him to run across the yard.

  2. There are easy ways to have a cat enjoy the outdoors safely. You can set up a cat enclosure in your yard. You can also take him out on a leash and harness. I have a cat who walks 2-3 times a day on leash. He gets his outdoor time which makes him happy and he remains safe at the same time.

  3. Hi DCP and Deanie:

    Wonderful advices, indeed!

I have shared my advice/input with Rachel before posting this. She said she tried letting Edgar out and to her surprise, he only stayed nearby for a couple of hours before coming in and he was content. I am sure she will keep all of what you said in mind if she ends up keeping him.

For anyone who wants to keep their cat safe while letting them enjoy outdoor, here's the links of different ways:

  4. Thank you all so much for your input and advice. It has been 2 days since we started letting him outside on his own. We were very nervous at first that he would get lost or hurt. However, he HAS been staying close by, which was a pleasant surprise, and was much more content when he came back inside. We are happier, and he is MUCH happier, which was the whole point all along.

If we can maintain this new pattern, we may just be able to make it work. However, we are still open to a placement where he would truly be free if that situation presents itself. Bottom line is that we want Edgar to be happy and safe.

God bless you all for your thoughts and support.

    Rachel

  6. Rachel, I would take him, I am in Md, I had a deaf cat, and she insisted on going outside. I live on 1.3 acres, and she always stayed close by, but was sooo content, I could never take the outdoors away from her. I did worry about other animals, but I know how much she relied on her other senses, and felt that was the trade-off. She ended up dying in a freak accident in the garage, good luck
