I received a call about a matted, skinny, stray dog, couldn't even tell if it was male or female the matts were
so bad. Since it was Christmas eve the caller did not call animal control, besides the shelter was probably
not the place for this dog, she seemed to be deaf. I was able to find a wonderful temporary foster who cut off all the matts and gave her a bath. She has since been to the vet, has been spayed, she's about 10 to 12 years
old, yes, she is deaf, had a very bad ear infection, has the beginning of cataracts, she's sweet old girl
looking for a home. She's a schnauzer mix, about 25 lbs, a benji looking type dog, she needs a fenced
yard because she does wander and can't hear you call her. Please contact me if you want to adopt her.

Hi Everyone,

I'm just trying to put out a mass plea for a cat we have here named Squeakers. Poor Squeakers has been here almost a whole year! He is 12 going on 13 years old and is deaf! Squeakers was in one of our long runs for ever until room opened up at the Caroline County Detention Center where he's been for the last several months. He was not doing so great there and was starting to fight with the other cats in the room. It's a small room that they're kept in at the Center. So because Squeakers was not doing so well, he was brought back to the shelter where we put him back in his long run. Now he is in the run with other cats and has never had an issue here before he went to the detention center. We think he may just be starting to show signs of stress and because of this, we are desperately trying to get our boy out. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Please let all your friends and rescue contacts know about Squeakers' plight. He is a wonderful boy who we want to get out of the shelter. I've enclosed pictures of our boy too for you all!

Hazel will die in less than 24 hours without intervention!

Her owner naively took her to the shelter thinking she was giving her a chance to find a home. In reading her bio, it appears Hazel is really a very normal and great dog. Her big crimes...ones she will die for are: 1. shedding 2. giving warning snaps to children who were not supervised and 3. counter surfing, which happens only when humans leave things there to surf for.

My name is Cinda. I live in Lafayette Colorado. I have a deaf dog named Hazel who needs a new home. I adopted Hazel from the humane society over two years ago. She is a little over four years old. She was in the shelter because her owner had died. Hazel is a super sweet dog. She has presumably been deaf since birth. She knows the following signs:

· Sit

· Stay

· Come Here (her favorite!)

· GO

· She can catch ANY treat in her mouth, she’s really good.

I am a night shift worker, sleep during the day. Hazel is a good, good doggie. She is content to stay in the house. Can be left alone for hours and never go potty in the house. She LOVES to go for walks and becomes so excited when she sees her leash that she literally trembles in anticipation. I am only 4’ 11” so I use a Gentle Leader collar so that my strength is not a factor. Before I starting using that, Hazel would drag me all over the place, especially if she saw a rabbit or squirrel. Also she doesn’t quite know how to act when she encounters another dog, she makes me nervous, so the gentle leader makes me feel much more in control and confident as she doesn’t even attempt to go after anyone or anything as long as she’s wearing it. Great invention.

Hazel absolutely loves my three children and they love her. When I was in a relationship, my boyfriend had a young child two years old, and Hazel has snapped at him several times because he makes sudden movements and startles her, especially when she’s sleeping. She has NEVER broken the skin but for this reason, I would recommend a home without very young (younger than 5?) child.

Hazel is spayed and micro chipped. She is up to date on all her vaccinations.

The reason I am looking to rehome Hazel is because of the constant year round shedding. I have purchased a $20 shedding tool that removes a lot of hair and brush her at least every other day. I have to vacuum daily. Although she has a very nice orthopedic dog bed, she waits until we go to bed and sneaks up on the couch at night. She ALWAYS gets caught of course, because she can’t hear us when we wake up and doesn’t know we are standing over her disapprovingly until we tap her and sign for her to get off.

Hazel gets along well with my teeny long haired Chihuahua and they play constantly and even though Hazel is much much bigger than my little dog, she has never hurt him. I also have a cat who Hazel doesn’t bother.

Anyway, my youngest son has asthma and it is getting to be a full time job trying to stay on top of the shedding situation. Also, my ex husband is making a big deal of the shedding, claiming that it is causing my son to have more frequent asthma related illnesses.

Another reason that I have come to this difficult decision is that I have family in New Mexico and when I go to visit them, I take the little dog with me because he’s so portable and allowed in hotel rooms as well as welcome at my families houses. I have tried leaving Hazel with friends while I’m gone but she does NOT respond well to this. I don’t know if she is just so stressed out that we have left her or mad at us or what, but she is very naughty. She counter surfs and eats food off the counters (she never does this at home, I could and do leave food out all the time and she never attempts to steal it even if we are not home), also she would come in from outside and immediately pee and poop IN THE HOUSE!!!!!. I was so embarrassed. I cannot afford to board her while I am out of state and I would like to visit my family more often as I have a new granddaughter in NM.

I just think that Hazel would do better with a couple or family that could share in her care. I am feeling very overwhelmed. I feel like it is all on me to walk her, brush her, feed her, bathe her, and vacuum vacuum vacuum.

I know that Hazel would not do well in a shelter environment and my heart breaks just thinking of it, but I am in an urgent situation. I worry if she will get adopted because of her deafness, and if she does, if the family would recognize how to deal with it. Also, I worry that she would act like she did when I left her with my friends and they would think she is a bad dog and return her. I really feel that she needs some patience and understanding and lots of love. She is a very loving affectionate gentle dog. And very well behaved, completely house trained.

I live in a tri level town home and I keep baby gates up going to the downstairs and upstairs in order to keep the bedrooms hair free and I would recommend confining her in this way especially at first in her new home.

Dylan is a smart boy with a great personality who pays close attention to his human companions and has learned sign language. He knows the commands sit, come, down, and will automatically sit if he see you have a treat for him. He really forms a strong bond with his people. He is also full of energy like a playful and fun two-year-old puppy.

Dylan is looking for a loving human to take him under their wing to continue his training and boost his confidence. He loves people and is full of kisses and tail wags. This adorable little 2-year-old DEAF boxer needs a home!! She was abandoned out in a field and has been in the shelter for a long time :( She has one blue eye and one brown eye. Knows a few signs, and a visual-centric home (deaf people or interpreters) would be a perfect fit. Ottawa is not far from the Kansas City area, and I'm sure something could be worked out for non-Kansas residents by way of transportation. So, please spread the word!

Several years ago Denali wandered into someone's back yard. His ears had been cut off in an apparent non-medical attempt at ear cropping. It turns out he was deaf as well.

Adoption attempts were unsuccessful, but a foster home was found and this eventually turned into a permanent home. Denali was living the good life with other dogs, cats, and a bunny rabbit. He loved to swim in the pool and jump in the morning shower with his new mom.

However, now he is suffering the unexpected tragedies of human life, including a divorce, unemployment, and a home foreclosure. Sadly, Denali must find a new home, and fast.

Denali did suffer some kind of back injury several years ago and had back/spinal surgery. He seems to have healed fine, but he can't hold it indefinitely, though it is possible this could improve with a change of food (I've seen improvements like this before).

Many of the details are foggy right now. I am still trying to gather all the facts, but don’t want to hold up networking him for a few details. I’ll get more info just as soon as I can.

Denali needs a new home, a foster home, or a rescue group to take him. For any or all of these, standard interview, home check, reference checks, and adoption contract will apply. He will not simply be handed over to someone else, no questions asked.

He is a pittie mix, probaby 5 - 7 yrs old., 70+ lbs, neutered. Good with other animals.

Oddball Oscar is an adorable deaf little wiener dog of about 9 years old who is desperate to find someone who will love him and understand him, for once! Oscar was surrendered by his owner's son because they could no longer care for him. It's true, Oscar is deaf and does have some cataracts, but that doesn't mean he is ready for the end! Sheesh

This spunky guy has a lot of living to do and love to give. In fact, when you take Oscar for a walk, he trots along like a youngster, leaping up onto steps without a care in the world, ears flapping in the wind like flags. He really likes to go for walks and explore what is around him - typical inquisitive dachshund! Oscar was tested with cats at the shelter and did pretty well, so he could probably live with a kitty if you have one at home. He also did OK with other little dog he met here, but please bring any resident pups you might have at home in with you to meet Oscar so that we can make sure it's a perfect match!

Oscar can be a little fussy over his food bowl, so we recommend feeding him separate. We would also prefer that he go to a home without children (as they might freak him out with his hearing issue and impaired vision). An ideal place for t his guy would be a nice calm home with adults who are pretty relaxed but do enjoy getting outside for some fresh and sight seeing. Does this sound like you or someone you know?

Stolen and Abused Pup is Back with the Family

Harmony, was found after being stolen for several weeks. Harmony's mom adopted her to surprise daddy for Christmas. During her short time missing, there was reports of abuse. She is lucky to be ok and reunited with her family, who have not given up on her from the beginning. Harmony is a family member just like Thomasson's human kids.

This sweet boy is currently at Clayton County Animal Control. He has been there about a week and I've been keeping my eye on him. He is a really sweet boy, but he does not appear to hear much, if anything at all!!! I think he has a pretty bad ear infection, and if it has been going on awhile, that would probably explain the lack of hearing. He has already been placed on the "kill list" and I was able to get him a little more time, but I don't know how long it would actually be the humane thing to do to keep him just sitting down there... I don't think he's a young dog. His AC# is 120012. If anyone has any options for this sweet boy, please act quickly. At the moment, Cherry is living under a table in a little cat carrier (blanketed), is being fed and is fairly content. We all have adult cats so taking her in is not an option. Winnefred is here at Carson City Shelter. She has been adopted twice and returned both times. She needs to get out to a rescue that can deal with her deafness, and her separation anxiety issues. She does need to get out soon, as she is miserable in the kennel and the likelihood of finding her a home from here is very slim. Please let me know if you have someone that can take her soon.

Winnefred weighs about 40lbs, she is a spaniel mix, deaf and has seperation anxiety. She is so very sweet, loves other dogs, cats and children.

North Branch, MI: Welsh Springer Spaniel Puppy Needs a Home

I have a litter of 5 Welsh Springer Spaniel puppies who are 4.5 wks old. One of them is deaf. He is all white, except for a red spot over his right eye and he has light blue eyes. He is too young for the Baer test, but we know from his behavior that he is deaf.

We are calling him Billy (we name the puppies just to keep a record of them while they are with us; their new owners can call them whatever they would like). He is a male. We are in North Branch, MI.

We have started to use the 'thumbs up' sign with Billy whenever he gives us eye contact and when he uses the litter tray. We are trying to get him off to a good start, as we do with all our puppies. He will have an eye test by a vet Ophthalmologist at 7 wks old, and a vet exam and first vaccines at 8 wks. A forever compassionate home is my goal for him.

A Loving Tribute for Marley

It has been a year on May 2, 2010 since precious Marley bid farewell to this earth, her beloved human mom and everyone who had met her. Her wings took her far away where heaven awaited to embrace her. Not a day goes by that I don't think of her and will talk with her in spirit often. I have been putting off to do this because it's painful for me but at the same time, I do not want to let this month pass without acknowledging Marley.

I adopted Marley from a family who decided to surrender her when she was one year old. She knew no commands and when I had her on the first day, she learned to sit in American Sign Language (ASL) within minutes. Being Deaf with ASL as my native language, it only made sense that I use it with her. I encourage people, deaf and hearing, with deaf pets to consider the use of ASL and portions of Deaf Culture's way of life that benefits deaf pets. Hearing pets as well people do benefit from ASL. It would bring everyone together in name of ASL everywhere you go!

Marley was a very feisty dog with her own mind and was not an easy dog. She also had separation anxiety and I have been working with her to overcome it. Something a lot of people wouldn't have patience for but I accepted her for who she is. She got better over the years but was still the same old Marley. I was grateful she came to me or else she would have been tossed around a couple more times like many other deaf dogs. I stuck it through with her although she drove me crazy sometimes. All the happiness and laughter she brought me on top of her craziness make her extra extra special. I was prepared to love her unconditionally as animals are good at teaching us that.

She was diagnosed with liver disease. It was all relatively new to me and I didn't wait to absorb as much as I can about liver disease as it is the most crucial organ although I still learn everyday about liver disease. The best way to do this was to provide her with a managed low protein diet under the advice of holistic veterinarian(s) and eventually with medicine management when Marley needed them. Marley was not a good candidate for surgery if things got worse for her. Also, to put her under anesthesia would be risky as it is known to metabolize through liver. Because of low protein diet and medicine management, Marley was able to lead an active, crazy, happy and normal lifestyle for the next 5 years. For a pet to have liver disease, I want everyone to know that it is not a death sentence and Marley is a living proof of this. It has cost me more than $20k over the years but do I regret it? No! Did I learn to get pet insurance? Yes!

There have been times during those years when there was a scare but Marley was always a fighter and surprised everyone at the vet office and hospital by coming back every time, except for the last time. Knowing Marley, she dreaded being separated from me and the sooner she is well enough, she will go home with me. That is what seemed to give her the will not to give up.

One morning I rushed her to the hospital when something didn't look right. Upon arrival, she was taken into the room. The vet technician came out to tell me that Marley was bumping into everywhere and was blind. I told her that it is not possible as she could see when we got in. That was when I learned that her brain swelled up to a point that it was fatal and it had impaired her vision. Her bloodwork and values were off the chart. She was given medication to help with the brain swelling and put on an IV. The doctor didn't seem to have much hope.

That evening I came to visit Marley with one of my old shirts that I had worn for her to have through the night with my scent. I knew it was very hard for her not to be with me. If she could, she prefers to be with me 24/7 or she gets anxious. As I entered the hospital to spend time with Marley, I wasn't certain what her prognosis would be. The nurse told me there had been no change since late morning and that she was still blind. I saw Marley lying at a distance on the lower kennel hooked up to an EKG machine. All of sudden, I saw her weakly lifting her head and sniffing at something familiar. The closer I walked towards her, the more she knew it was me and waited for me. As I sat down, she excitedly crawled on me and laid down on my chest to rest. The nurse was amazed and said that was a good sign. Tears welled up in my eyes and my heart was broken. I stayed for a good period of time. It was so hard to part with her that evening.

When I went home. I cried and prayed for her through the night. The next day, I was notified that I can take Marley home. I had to pinch myself that it wasn't a dream. I couldn't believe my eyes and said what?! The lady said, "Yes, her bloodwork looks great and she is ready to go." When I arrived to pick up Marley, here she came out running to me and jumped on me repeatedly as to say, "Why did you leave me behind!?" and acts as if nothing ever happened.

Fast forward to a couple of years later, there was no surprise comeback like many times before. I had opted to bring Marley home from the hospital after leaving her there for the day to find out what's wrong and was asked to bring her back on Monday if she was not improving. I did not leave her at the hospital for several days this time as I saw in Marley's eyes that I needed to bring her home. I never wanted her to die alone in the hospital so either she died at home or by euthanasia in my presence.

The next morning I took her to the local vet for bloodwork that was recommended by the hospital and then I went to the clinic to drop off a foster cat to be vetted. Marley was with me and a couple of people saw her at the clinic and noticed that she was lethargic and quiet, which was unlike of her. That evening at home, I was lying down with her next to me with her on the pillow to make her comfortable after she fought with me when I gave her medicines and she threw up. I signed to her that I'll have to take her back to the hospital in the morning. I did massage on her that she loved - something I always do for her from time to time. I don't normally stay up this late but it was midnight. When I left her side to get something, I get this sense of urge to look back. When I did, she already lifted her head to see where I was going and then she gasped for air. I ran to her and held her close to me until she became lifeless. I didn't accept reality that she was gone, especially when several times over the years, she surprised me with her comebacks.

I wrapped Marley in a fleece blanket and drove her to the hospital. Part of me was hoping she wasn't dead. The vet confirmed her death. I was in shock and the first night without her was very hard. It didn't sink in until a few days later that she was really gone. I remembered that week after she passed away, I woke up to a fan spinning one morning and on a different morning, I woke up to a light turned on. I also had intense dreams about her. Something I have never experienced. I believe it was her way of telling me she's ok and is still around me.

Marley really enjoyed meeting all foster dogs that were brought home. Some were from the street, some from surrender and some from rescue. They were either mutts or purebreds. It was fascinating to observe her interaction with each one of them. She is known to be alpha and often makes it clear to other dogs. With the exception of this 6 lbs dog named Sophie, to my surprise, Marley willingly gave her spot with me on bed to this dog and lets Sophie dominate her such as chasing her off the bed. Then there's Eli who she adored and treated him like a boyfriend. Eli returned the favor. They would play all day long. With Shauna, she had her serious fight regardless the fact that Shauna was 5 times bigger than her and I would put Marley at fault for initiating it. She came out of it unscathed whereas Shauna was bruised. I think it is healthy for my pets to have this kind of experience where they get to meet different dogs and in the process, it saves lives through fostering. My pets and foster dogs have learned something from being together. It is one way to show love not only for my own but for others.

Anytime I give her a treat before I stepped out of the house for work or to somewhere, she would spit out the treat, barked at me and jumped on me to let me know she is refusing to be bribed. She was very food motivated but she knows when not to accept it. She can be too smart for her own good. She hated it when I have to leave her no matter how many times she saw my loyalty to her by keeping up with the consistency and structure. It hurts me every time. When I get home, she would be like a jumping bean and get all lickety with me that it was difficult to hold her still while she was at it.

This is one of many funny stories about her. One summer I bought a huge inflatable pool for my backyard. It was for me and my other dog, Murray, who loves water. Marley hated water and would avoid it at all cost. One day, Marley wanted to play with Murray and would go non stop until Murray had it enough. Marley won't give it up and kept playing. Murray decided to run towards the pool and jump in it and go to the middle of it so he's not reachable to Marley. Marley barked to tell him to get out but he stayed there, enjoying the water all while avoiding Marley. Marley wouldn't dare go in the pool so the next thing that happened was that Marley put her mouth on the inflatable pool and ripped it. I have to admit I laughed because I never thought she would go this far and it was just a few days old since I bought the inflatable pool! She was a character.

Marley loved all people and dogs. I often take her to the dog park. Sometimes she would bark so loud that may frighten some of them but it was her way of telling them to come closer or for me to bring her closer to greet them or be greeted when she is on the leash. One time she would jump in the wagon that one mother was pulling with her toddlers in it as we walked by. The mother freaked only to find Marley licking her girls face before jumping off the wagon. Marley was always good and loving around children.

Marley had the opportunity to visit a deaf school and deaf camp to educate deaf children about how wonderful deaf pets are. Deaf children were in awe and enjoyed themselves. Marley also had the fortune of participating in Tent City to give support during the Unity of Gallaudet Movement in 2006.

What I miss the most about her is that she was such a cuddlebug. She loved to sleep under the cover between my legs or under my arm or wherever else she can press against me and curl up. She would sometimes lick me until she fell asleep. Such a velcro dog that deaf dogs are often known for.

Prior to my deaf dogs, I thought Dalmatians were the only breed that may be deaf. I had even bought a Dalmatian statute a long time ago as a symbol. My deaf dogs were the reason I started the Deaf Animals facebook, twitter and website with the help of Avi, Philip and Raychelle's expertise. The goal is to help raise awareness within deaf community as well as hearing community, not only for deaf cats, deaf dogs or deaf ferrets but also for every kind of deaf animal that exists, be it domestic, farmed and wild.

When I learned that one of Marley's pictures, from Melissa McDaniel's Deaf Dogs Photobook, was chosen to be used on the cover of Deaf Life Magazine for April 2011 issue, I was honored by such coincidence as it's been almost one year since Marley's passing. I will cherish the magazine with her cover for years to come. The article is about deaf dogs and the negative mythology surrounding them. McGrady and His Irish Blessing

McGrady truly has the "Luck O' the Irish"! He is an Australian Shepherd and is located in NC. McGrady, who I pulled 3/6/2010 from Ashe County (NC) Animal Control, intending to foster him for rescue until he was adopted. They were only obligated to keep strays around 1 week before euthanizing them. However, despite thinking he might be deaf and because they liked him so much, they gave McGrady 35 days of life. Just in time for me to see him on petfinder. He is, indeed, deaf but also one of the smartest dogs I've ever met. I had NO idea about all the crazy beliefs there were out there about deaf dogs (ie, that they're "time bombs") until deciding to keep McGrady and starting to read about how best to train him. Almost weekly, strangers will say, "oh poor baby" when learning he's deaf; however, when we demonstrate all the commands he knows, they walk away saying, "WOW! How smart!"

I started the FB page for McGrady, or "McG" as we call him, to simply demonstrate how "normal," fun, smart and easy-to-live with deaf dogs are! Also, to help fight those unwarranted beliefs and to show that you don't have to have any special credentials (besides love and patience, just like with any other dog) to own a deaf dog.

A 501c3s can pull at no charge - dogs are available fully vetted to individual adopters for $140. If a rescue chooses they can pay the $140 and the dog will come fully vetted (no microchip tho).

These are the cutest pups that I have seen in a while. They have been at the shelter for over 3 weeks. We wanted to make sure that they did not break with parvo after giving them their vaccine. It has been 2 weeks today since they had their vaccine so I think they are good to go. Both are girls and the little white one is blue-eyed and deaf. She has some speckling on her eyes but that is the only coloring she has. I believe they will be big dogs as they have tree trunk legs and big feet. They need rescue ASAP as they will be first on the list. They are approx 10-12 weeks old.

Lady was living in a home with a child. Her and the child were playing together, but then she scratched him and the family brought her to the shelter. She is now off hold and ready for her new life!

A volunteer wrote: Lady is a 7 month old pittie mix who arrived at the shelter on 2/18. Lady was brought to the shelter by her owner, who said she no longer wanted Lady because she had scratched the child in the home. Lady has a beautiful white coat with big brown eyes and a big black nose, she is beyond adorable and reminds me so much of the Coca-Cola polar bears! Lady is quite the social butterfly at the shelter and seems interested in making friends with every person or creature she meets, and this includes her own reflection in glass doorways! Lady seems to have grasped the concept of housebreaking already, as she goes to the bathroom immediately when taken outside, and also can sit down when prompted, but she will still need some basic training like any other puppy. For the past few days I have been at the shelter I have noticed Lady sleeping soundly in her kennel during periods of incredibly loud barking and noise, I finally took her out for a walk today and have confirmed my suspicions that she is in fact deaf. Because of this, Lady will require her puppy training a different and obviously non-verbal form, and will need a forever family willing help her with this. Since Lady is very visually oriented, curious, and loves her treats I'm sure she will pick up hand signals quite quickly. It has in fact been proven that all dogs respond better and learn their commands faster though hand signals rather than verbal commands alone. Having fostered deaf dogs previously, I can tell you that my own hearing dog learned all of hand signal commands just through watching me interact with her deaf foster siblings, and I still sometimes find myself signing to her rather than speaking, as it becomes a habit quite quickly! I would urge anyone looking for a dog to please consider this gorgeous girl despite her "disability," as you would be hard pressed to find another so wiggly and delicious. I really hope there is someone out there who will see Lady not as "special needs" but rather as just "special," because that is exactly what she is! Lady is waiting for you at the Manhattan Shelter!

FREE TO GOOD HOME. This is a 12 year old female Black Lab named Athena. We have had her since she was 6 weeks old. The only noticeable Chow is the black spot on the tung. She is very sweet and is good with children. She would be great for an elderly person. Due to her age she is not very active but she is in good health. Athena had a physical last December. Her only medical problem is she is deaf. She is an indoor dog and likes a pet door so she can go in and out as she pleases. My wife passed away 1 year ago and I am raising a 13 year old grandson and will soon have a 5 year old grandson to raise. I am having to move and will not able to take Athena. Adoptive family wants to return after 8 months due to Pinky not getting along with their female dog; Pinky is wonderful with all people, children and male dogs. In talking with the people last night, they are not happy about returning Pinky, but know of no other recourse. I am to call them in a week, hopefully, with a foster situation for Pinky. We can use help with finding foster for her instead of having Pinky resort back to a shelter setting. Remember, too, Pinky is deaf.

Went to see this beautiful boy today. He was very sweet and happy to get out in the fresh air. He is a neutered, high HW positive deaf boxer boy. He has full tail, but hey a tail is good. Tumor of some sort on left leg but all in all a sweet boy. I receive many kisses from this
boy. We tested him with a large male dog and he did wonderful. We also tested him with a small female dog and he was just fine. No issues, no aggression just wanting to play. CATS ARE A NO NO. He does not like cats as I found out trying to get him into the park. This boy has only 3 weeks left at the shelter and then he will be put to sleep. Please tag all boxer rescues that you can. I will help in transport of course and will pull him from the shelter. He is just too sweet to loose his life. I fell in love with him myself. Please help me help him.

Her name is Izzabella, or Izzy for short. She's approximately 4 years old, spayed, microchipped, UTD on vaccines, HW negative. She is deaf, was trained to hand signals and crate trained when I fostered her. How much of that was retained in the new home I'm not sure. She is being returned due to "issues". She needs to be in a
one dog only home or in a foster home that has time and energy to spend with her. She did well for me here with my Dane/Boxer mix and my Bullmastiff but it took a few weeks of them working out their differences and learning their place on the totum pole. I currently have too many shelter fosters to take her back in. She LOVES people and kids and was wonderful with my 4 small children. She's a smart girl and like any boxer will get into trouble if she's bored. Exercise, attention, and a person willing to teach her and learn from her is what's going to be key to finding her the perfect home.

The boxer rescue that she is with now has begged and begged for a one dog only home to foster to but to no avail. No one wants to see her crated a majority of the time as it's only going to make her slide downhill. Can anyone help?

New Haven, CT: Pit Bull Mix Seeks a Home

One-year-old Banks was left in the local dog park. He played with the other dogs in the snow as he awaited our arrival to pick him up.The concerned citizen pointed him out in the park but he was hard to spot because he blended in with the snow banks, hence his new name. Banks is DEAF but responds well to face recognition and some hand signals. He would love a home where he will receive extra training for his disability. He is very sweet and cuddly but does play like a wild man at times and it is hard to get his attention in order to have him chill out.

Conroe, Texas: JRT Mix Needs to Leave Shelter

Hi All:

This little deaf Jack Russell Terrier mix has been at animal control in Conroe Texas since sometime in January and no one has been able to come to her aid. Mya probably got lost in the Christmas commotion and well, you know there are so many and it is easy to forget.

Anyway. Just received an update on Mya. She is still there and she still needs out of the shelter before it is too late. I have one completely blind dog and one JRT losing his sight to cataracts. Helping these special needs dogs is particularly rewarding. They appreciate love and a safe place more than you can imagine. I know that this little girl would too.

So, please look at her picture and consider adopting, rescuing, fostering for a rescue or donating to help a rescue defray any medical and/or boarding expenses. If you are unable to help her, please post far and wide. Don't let distance deter you -- I know that we can figure out how to get her transported to whomever has a space in their home and heart.

Please crosspost. Hopefully, someone will be able to help this dog. She will go to the shelter in a few days, where she will more than likely be killed because she is not highly adoptable and the shelter is forced to make these tough decisions because of our city's overwhelming pet overpopulation.

She was found wandering around Chickasaw Gardens. She is about 3-4 years old, very sweet, and is blind and partially deaf. She has a collar, no tags or chip. She is temporarily at Walnut Grove Animal Hospital in Memphis, TN where she will be able to stay for a few days, thanks to their compassion.

A Vounteer Writes: Benny is a 6 yo Labrador Retriever who recently arrived to the shelter. He is a stray.

He is one of the sweetest dog ever and so well behaved with people and dogs alike. Even with cats who

where sitting in cages at his level. Benny is great on the leash, calm, very much housetrained and civil

with all dogs met on the street. He can sit on command, loves caresses and just to stay laying down at his

caretaker's feet. Benny is not a skinny dog but I doubt that he enjoyed great care in his former home.

Benny is a friendly and affectioanet dog. He deserves better treatment this time around:a master, a family

who will give him love, healthy nutrition , good care , long walks and a soft bed. Benny is at the

Manhattan shelter. He is waiting for his new family.

Deaf Senior needs a home. Last Thursday I was driving in Watts when a dog ran across a busy intersection and was nearly struck by 4 cars. I immediately pulled over and ran to him. Normally when I chase after strays, they run. When I approached this dog, he immediately surrendered and looked at me with desperation. With a hodgepodge leash I was able to get him to my car. He jumped in immediately and collapsed on the front seat. He was panicked, scared and dehydrated. This poor dog was in bad shape. His hair was so matted that he had trouble walking. I got him water and to a groomer right away. I needed to know what I was dealing with so we shaved him completely. Turns out "Willy" is a neutered male. He is a poodle mix. He was not wearing a collar and is not microchipped. He is approximately 12 years old and completely DEAF. He was checked by my vet today and amazingly does not appear to have any medical issues (he does have cataract). He is missing quite a few teeth. After a couple days of food, water, sleep and lots of belly rubs, his true personality is emerging. He is a gentle sweetheart who is so appreciative of being saved. He gets along with all dogs, is house trained, enjoys walks and loves to take naps. He was definitely loved at some point in his life but for whatever reason ended up homeless and alone in a really bad part o town. Please help me find him a forever home. He deserves to live out his senior years peacefully.

Buddy (Petraits attached) is a very sweet, gentle and shy, ten-year-old, 45-pound, male, Shar Pei looking for a loving home.

Buddy was at Chicago Animal Care and Control huddled and afraid in the back of his cage when We Luv Paws Chinese Shar Pei came to his rescue.

Buddy was covered with old bite wounds. But he is a live and let live kind of guy, a gentle soul who gets along just fine with other dogs. He doesn’t appear to know formal commands, but takes treats gently from your fingers. Buddy is perfectly housebroken, crate-trained, neutered, de-wormed, up-to-date on vaccines, micro-chipped, heartworm-tested and on preventative. He is deaf due to un-treated ear infections throughout his life. He’s had a recent dental and has very few teeth left.

URGENT URGENT DEAF BOY AT DELANO ANIMAL SHELTER!!

CAGE# E-13. He came in as a stray with cement covering the wounds on his face. He is about 3-4 years old. Despite all he has been through he is a gentled giant.

Does not know hand commands but is good on leash. Doesn't have problems with other dogs. No cats please! Needs rescue or experienced person who knows about deaf bully breeds. Please help. He has been at the shelter for about 4 months and needs to get out soon!
